Add Zoom to a Bar Chart Race

Zoom pushes the camera in on the bars that matter — the leader, a close overtake, or one item you want the viewer to follow. Set it by hand, or let the chart zoom on its own when the ranking changes.

Before you start

Zoom is horizontal-only
The Zoom section is hidden while Vertical Bars is switched on. If you cannot find Zoom in the panel, that is almost always why — turn vertical bars off and it reappears.
1

Open the Zoom section

Zoom is an optional section, so it is not in the panel until you add it. Scroll the bar chart race settings to Zoom and click the plus button on the right of the header.

Adding the section does not change the video on its own — it just gives you the controls.

2

Pick a mode

Mode is the first decision, and it changes every other control in the section.

Manual lets you place each zoom yourself, at a time you choose, on an item you choose. Use it when you already know which moments matter — a record being broken, a specific overtake — and you want them framed exactly.

Automatic reacts to the race as it plays, zooming when the ranking changes. Use it for long races, where it will catch overtakes you would otherwise have to find and time by hand.

3

Place manual zoom windows

In manual mode each zoom is a card with four settings. Selected Item is the column the camera centres on. Scale is how far in it pushes, from x2 to x6. Zoom Start is when it begins, and Zoom Duration is how long the whole move lasts.

Add as many windows as you need and place them in order, earliest first.

Windows cannot overlap
If a Zoom Start would collide with an earlier window, the editor moves it forward to the moment that window ends — so the value you typed silently changes. It is not a bug, but it is surprising. Placing windows in chronological order avoids it entirely.
4

Configure automatic zoom

In automatic mode you describe the behaviour instead of the timings.

Baseline Target is where the camera rests: Only #1 follows the leader, Top 3 frames the front of the pack, and Hero item follows one column you nominate — choosing it reveals a Hero Item picker.

Zoom on Rank Change decides which overtakes are worth a move: Off, Only #1, Top 3, or All. On a crowded race, All is usually too busy.

Scale caps how far any automatic zoom pushes in. Two toggles finish the section: Zoom on milestones reacts to round-number moments in the data, and Zoom to winner closes on whoever finishes first.

5

Allow for the ramp

Every window eases in and eases out over one second at each end. That framing is what makes a zoom feel like a camera move rather than a cut — but it also means a short window is all ramp.

A three second zoom spends one second pushing in, one second held, and one second pulling back. Drop below about 2500 ms and there is no hold left at all: the camera arrives and immediately leaves, which reads as a twitch.

A three second zoom window spends one second easing in, one second held at full scale, and one second easing out ease in 1000 ms hold 1000 ms ease out 1000 ms full scale x1 1500 ms no hold at all reads as a twitch

A window always eases in and out over one second at each end, so a 3000 ms zoom holds for only about a second. Below roughly 2500 ms there is no hold left.

6

Preview and export

Scrub the timeline through each window before rendering — zoom is easier to judge in motion than from the settings.

One practical limit: zoom is baked into the bar sprites rather than applied to the finished frame, so a very large race at x6 uses noticeably more memory than the same race at x3. If a long project struggles to render, lowering the scale is the first thing to try.

Older projects migrate themselves
Projects built before multiple zoom windows existed used a single zoom setting. Opening the Zoom section converts that automatically into one manual window, so the original zoom is preserved and there is nothing to redo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Zoom section missing?

Zoom only applies to horizontal bars. If Vertical Bars is switched on in the Items panel the Zoom section is hidden — turn it off and Zoom reappears.

Why did my Zoom Start change by itself?

Zoom windows cannot overlap. If a start time would collide with an earlier window, the editor moves it forward to the moment that window ends. Place your windows in order, earliest first, to avoid it.

Should I use manual or automatic zoom?

Use manual when you know the exact moments that matter and want them framed precisely. Use automatic for long races, where it will catch overtakes you would otherwise have to find and time by hand.

Why does x6 look soft?

Bars are rendered into sprites and then magnified, so the highest scales trade sharpness for reach. If x6 looks soft, x3 or x4 usually reads better on a phone screen.

Do I need to redo zoom on an older project?

No. Projects that used the older single-zoom setting are migrated automatically into a manual window the first time you open the Zoom section, so the existing zoom is preserved.
