Top Countries by Patent Applications in the World

Patent filings are one of the clearest signals of where innovation is happening at scale. In 2024, the world set a new record with 3.7 million patent applications filed globally, up 4.9% from 2023, according to WIPO.

When ranked by the origin of applicants worldwide, the top countries in 2024 were:

China — 1,795,715

United States — 501,831

Japan — 419,132

Republic of Korea — 295,722

Germany — 133,485

These five countries dominate global patent activity, but they do so for different reasons.

China

China was by far the largest source of patent applications in 2024, with nearly 1.8 million filings, more than triple the U.S. total. WIPO says China’s growth was driven mainly by resident filings, meaning Chinese applicants were especially active in seeking protection at home. China also accounted for 49.1% of all patent applications filed worldwide at patent offices in 2024, a dramatic increase from a decade earlier.

One major reason patent counts are so high in China is sheer scale. China has a huge domestic market, a very large industrial base, and massive innovation spending. OECD reports that China’s R&D expenditure reached USD 917 billion in 2023 on a PPP basis, close to the U.S. level, and that China’s R&D growth in 2023 outpaced the OECD, the U.S., and the EU.

Another reason is intensity. WIPO says China was the most intensive filer relative to GDP in 2024, with 4,977 resident patent applications per USD 100 billion of GDP. That suggests not only size, but also a system that converts research and industrial activity into filings very efficiently.

United States

The United States ranked second with 501,831 patent applications by origin in 2024. Even though it trails China by a wide margin, the U.S. remains one of the world’s strongest innovation centers and the leading source of abroad filings, meaning U.S. applicants are especially active in seeking patent protection outside their home market.
